BHARATPUR

ABOUT THE PLACE

Keoladeo National Park, formerly known as Bharatpur bird sanctuary, is the only sanctuary in India that is man-made. Developed by the erstwhile Maharaja of Bharatpur, it is regarded as one of the best bird sanctuaries in the world and hence was declared a World Heritage site on 1985. It was declared a protected sanctuary on 1982.

The avifauna sanctuary is spread across an area of approximately 29 sq km, 10 sq km of which is covered with fresh water marshes, shallow lakes and bogs. The congenial environment and adequate supply of nutritious food for the birds attract thousands of indigenous as well as migratory birds every year. During winter thousands of rare and endangered species of birds, including the world-renowned Siberian Cranes, throng this place. This sanctuary is home to over 230 species of bird. Many of the migratory birds come here from faraway places like Siberia and Central Asia.
