Mahabalipuram
Locals
call it Mammallapuram. A detached town by the sea, it can be an
excellant alternative to staying at Chennai, 50 km away. Expect
to meet an outpouring of day trippers during winter vacation. The
beach isn't exactly suited to bathing; try the areas around the
upmarket resorts.
Temples and rock-cut sculptures, dating between 5th and 8th centuries,
are strewn along the shore. Early morning is the best time to go
around the place. Consult the local Archaeological Survey of India
office for guides. The Shore Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site;
Arjuna's Penance is a popular rock-cut panel. Entry by ticket; open
9 am to 5 pm. During December/January, the temple complex is the
venue of the annual Dance Festival.
