Ellora
This supreme
example of rock-cut architecture in the Deccan, Ellora is listed
in the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built between 7 and 12 Century
AD, the 34 caves contain Hindu, Buddhist and Jain scupltures. Cave
no. 16, depicting Mt. Kailash or the abode of Lord Shiva, is said
to be the world's largest monolithic scupltures; its artistic excellence
supercedes the other caves. In December, the annual Ellora Dance
and Music Festival is held in front of this cave.
Arranged along a two km long escarpment, it requires some time
to see all the caves and their intricate craftsmanship. In case
you choose to be selective, head for caves 6, 10 to 12, 14 to 16,
21, 29, 32, and 34. Except for Cave no. 16, entry to the other caves
is free. Ellora remains closed on Mondays. Timing 9 am to 5.30 pm.
Carry a torch.
